Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, majestically dominates Eastern Nepal, straddling the border between Nepal and Sikkim. This colossal Himalayan massif includes four main summits: Kanchenjunga Main, Middle, South, and Yalung Kang. The first successful ascent was achieved in 1955 by a British expedition team.
The region surrounding Kanchenjunga is safeguarded by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project, a collaborative effort between the Nepal Government and the World Wildlife Fund. This area is home to a rich variety of wildlife, including the elusive Red Panda.
Three of Kanchenjunga’s main peaks—Main, Central, and South—sit along the Nepal-Sikkim border, while the remaining two, including Yalung Kang (8,420m), are within Nepal’s Taplejung District. Some mountaineers regard Yalung Kang as a distinct peak. The North Face is widely considered the safest ascent route.
Expeditions generally begin at the base camp, located in breathtaking meadows at an altitude of 5,180 meters. On the Indian side, the Kanchenjunga National Park plays a vital role in preserving the mountain’s unique ecosystem, ensuring the protection of this awe-inspiring natural treasure.
