Makalu Base Camp Trekking

24 Days

The Makalu Base Camp trek is a unique and demanding adventure in eastern Nepal, now part of the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area. This region is one of Nepal’s most remote and less-visited areas, offering an authentic wilderness experience surrounded by stunning landscapes. The trek begins with a flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a journey through the Arun River valley to Sedua and Num. From here, trekkers cross the Shipton La Pass (4210 m) to enter the upper Barun River valley, where they can experience the awe-inspiring views of Makalu and Chamlang Himal.

With minimal modern amenities, the Makalu Base Camp trek provides a genuine adventure through diverse natural beauty. Due to the area’s isolation, camping is necessary as there are few tea houses along the way. The local population includes ethnic groups such as Sherpas, Rais, and Limbus. As you trek north along the Arun River, passing through Sedua and Num, the route brings you to the upper Barun Khola valley, offering an up-close view of Makalu (8,463m). For those desiring an even more challenging adventure, crossing Sherpani Col and West Col into the upper Hongu valley is an option, presenting a more rugged and demanding experience.
